State-of-the Art Learning Environment

Webster University’s School of Communications is home to some of the most advanced communications technology found at any college in the Midwest, offering students access to the same equipment used by many of the top film, video, sound recording and game design companies in the country. The School recently added the first virtual cinema video wall in the region and a state-of-the-art recording studio suite, including a Dolby Atmos studio, to its existing programs and facilities, and is providing students hands-on training with cutting edge tools in addition to deep emersion in industry-standard techniques.

Rothenbuhler: We have rehabbed a 66,000-square-foot building while we were still living and working in it. We've studied every detail and we've spared no expense.

Rothenbuhler: This phase of the spirit of remodeling project converted an entire wing of our building to a state-of-the-art production facility equipped with an LED video wall for a virtual cinema production, a state-of-the-art audio suite designed and built by folks who do this all over the country for professional recording facilities.

AuBuchon: This renovation means everything to us because our students and our students’ success means everything to us.

Rothenbuhler: The second floor of this remodeling includes computer labs and classrooms for video post-production; animation; game design; 2D photography and graphic work; a photo studio and a beautiful, beautiful photography gallery, the Kooyumjian Gallery.

Blattel: This classroom is actually one of the first ones I went into and like the dual monitors - I thought it was super cool.

AuBuchon: We've always attracted the kinds of students who wanted to get a quality education in media production and communications. Now we have the facilities and equipment to match the instructions.

Sawyer: What a video wall does is allows you to build the setting for a scene whether you're making a movie, or a TV show, or just filming a video - and it lets you change the background of what you're doing so that through a camera lens positioned properly you could look like you are anywhere that the screen is.

Rothenbuhler: If you need a scene in New Zealand and another scene in New England, you can shoot both of those in the same day - there's no travel budget.

Jimenez: Just knowing how to frame a camera or how to just set something up in a studio with an LED wall will have a big impact on making films in the future.

Park: Every day I walk into the studio, I'm like, so we have this now here, right? This is just unbelievable. We really want our students to go above and beyond the basics, above and beyond the fundamentals.

Nappa: I learned in a professional recording studio, and so that's what we're building here: three professional recording studios to learn the ins and outs of acoustics, signal flow, all of those type of things. Our audio program is phenomenal, world class, and now we have a world-class facility that goes along with it so that when you leave here, you can take what you learned and do it just about anywhere in the planet.

Guterman: I'm most excited about the “atmos” room the surround sound Studio B. It's got a bunch of crazy speakers and you can fly things all around the room, and it'll sound really cool.

Smith: The workplace in today's environment is very collaborative and energetic and engaging and that's what we're training the students to do.

Blattel: Collaboration is very important especially with the game design classes that I take we're constantly looking at each other's screens and sharing information in order to build a game.

Burton: And I look forward to being a part of many different you know cool things and different productions and I'm ready to see what my fellow classmates are going to bring to the table as well.

Griffey: The white boards all over the building. It's a wonderful way for students to collaborate. We have so many creative kids and you see the illustrations that start to form and the funny things that are on the wall and, and the words of encouragement.

Rothenbuhler: It was always an activity more than a space and now with the Kooyumjian. We have a purpose-built gallery space, a professional venue for exhibiting both the work of our own students and faculty and visiting artists. It's beautiful.

Sawyer: The upgrade in technology has been huge especially in game design where the students are doing a lot of their work on the computers, having those tools and putting them in a nice place to be, and making them easy to access is kind of priceless.

Smith: We are training students for jobs that might not even exist yet and this new phase of the Sverdrup building is a great sign of our dedication to them and our commitment to them so that they can learn with the best and most recent technology available.

Hunter: They care about what you want to do with your career and where you want your life to go.

Narrator: So knowing that all these different medias and different outlets of expression and creativity are being supported by the school means everything.

Rothenbuhler: This remodeling has been a 10-year project. We have now one of the best facilities anywhere in the country. Now is the time for students to come to the School of Communications at Webster University.

State-of-the-Art Media Production Facilities

The School of Communications complex houses a state-of-the-art media production and education facility, meeting industry standards, and including unique, first-in-the-region technologies and capabilities. Studio facilities include an audio and video production/recording suite, sound stage, workshop space, photography studio, gallery, animation, game design, and video post-production labs as well as flexible teaching spaces. The sound stage includes an LED wall for virtual cinema production, providing our students experience with the newest techniques in film, television and commercial video production.

A soundstage with the first virtual cinema system in the region, one of very few in an educational institution anywhere in the country. This technology, as used to film the popular Disney show “The Mandalorian,” allows film scenes for any location to be simulated to be shot in a studio environment.

An integrated audio suite with three control rooms, including an Atmos room, live sound room, isolation booths and networking technology to integrate work across the individual spaces and with the rest of the building infrastructure.

Hands-On Learning and Media Equipment Center

Webster students receive hands-on learning in environments that reflect the cutting-edge technology being used by the top communication companies in the world. Faculty and staff worked closely with the architects and engineers to make sure that the spaces created reflected the leading edge of industry and would give our students a significant advantage in their chosen fields after graduation.

Brooke Butler: There's a well-known story in the world of cinema about an early film made by the Lumiere Brothers. Because the concept of film was so new, when “Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat” was shown to audiences for the first time, it was said that people ran out of the theatre in a frenzy for fear that the train would not stop and would plow right off the screen.

Virtual Cinema System, 127 years later, the technological advancements of filmmaking have these students captivated by a train on a screen for much more complex reasons.

Eric Rothenbuhler: This is the first virtual cinema system in the St. Louis area and it's gotta be one of very few in an educational institution anywhere in the country.

Butler: This virtual cinema system utilizes advanced technology to create any setting or atmosphere and calibrates it to this LED studio wall as a soundstage. Basically, it allows a video to take place in any real or imaginary location.

Rothenbuhler: You can shoot a sunrise scene inside a soundstage all day long. You can shoot a rainy day indoors. You can shoot a sunny day indoors on a rainy day. It gives you complete freedom of production. You can also shoot actors in an imagined environment.

Rothenbuhler: You can invent environments and so on.

Butler: A major production to utilize this technology was “The Mandalorian,” in which over 50% of the first season was shot with a virtual cinema system.

Butler: And while these film and video production majors at Webster University probably won't be creating something as large scale as that, this technology is a recently added feature to the major renovations of the School of Communication's production facilities.

Butler: So when I was in undergrad here, this was ... I'm lost right now. I don't even know where we are. The media center was this way. So what's happening here?

Rothenbuhler: So this remodeling was a complete gutting of the building. So everything but the exterior envelope was demolished and pulled out and then reconstructed so that it could be purpose-built as a communication and media production facility.

Butler: The Sverdrup Building was built in the 1980s before Webster even had a School of Communications.

Butler: As the field grew exponentially, they built a small TV studio and fashioned classrooms into editing labs, dark rooms and a media center. So now through this remodeling process, students no longer have to squeeze into makeshift studios, but have access to more intentional production spaces.

Butler: So technology has helped in a lot of ways. It's also raised the question, everyone with a phone is a filmmaker now. Everyone can go on YouTube and learn how to program a game. How has that affected enrollment?

Rothenbuhler: I believe one of the reasons we've seen growth, everybody wants to tell visual stories, and young people have more facility with visual stories than earlier generations did. But you may not be a master storyteller yet. We all speak English. That doesn't make us all bestselling novelists.

Rothenbuhler: So we can take those native skills and shape them into professional skills. So this is an immersive sound system. There'll be 19 speakers in here. That creates a full 360-degree spherical sound field.

Butler: So all of this, just the process for this room, there's a lot of money in this room is what I'm saying. Do you see the return on investment happening?

Rothenbuhler: Absolutely. The facilities we're providing our students now mimic, they're designed architecturally and technically to mimic the kinds of workplaces they'll be moving into after they graduate.

Butler: Having these educational settings that resemble real industry workplaces especially makes sense with instruction from faculty members who continue to work in the industry.

Joshua Johnson: I'm still, even though I'm full-time teaching here, I'm still out there working. This past summer I worked on “Hocus Pocus 2.”

Juraj Bohus: So now I'm working on a film which I have 3D actors.

Butler: Joshua Johnson and Juraj Bohus are co-teaching the first class utilizing the virtual cinema system.

Butler: And while most film and video production classes don't rely on a textbook way of teaching, this class is particularly flexible.

Vincent Italiano: It's not like other programs where you have a selected curriculum and there's a bunch of tests you have to take and materials you have to cover. This is a process where everybody is learning, including the professors. It's completely experimental.

Italiano: My goals after I graduate I think are to get with some larger production houses with LED walls and visual effects and stuff like that.

Johnson: I think that's really important for students to have a professional, their professor, to actually be there still working in projects. Because as you can see, technology changes pretty quickly.
